Summer Bridge Courses

Courses offered by the Summer Bridge 2024 program provide you the opportunity to get ahead. Instructors look forward to getting to know you in their courses to support your strengths and confidence in learning. In these courses, students learn how to cultivate their personal voice, explore unique ways of thinking, and become confident in themselves as writers and learners.

All Summer Bridge students may earn up to 8 credits by registering for 2 courses. Each class provides multiple opportunities:

  • Engagement with faculty and peers
    • Live lectures, class discussions, and Supplemental Instruction (peer-led study groups)
    • Student hours with instructors and/or teaching assistants
  • Getting ahead in your major or college general education requirements

Summer Bridge students are expected to take their courses with the letter grade option.

2024 Course Options 1 & 2 (Tentative)

These courses are SUBJECT TO CHANGE depending on course/faculty availability. 

Students that participate in Summer Bridge will have the opportunity to participate in either EDS 25 or AWP 10 as a primary course – one that explores the purpose and current issues in higher education:

AWP 10: Language and Learning in the American Academy (4 units)

This course will introduce critical thinking, reading, writing, speaking, and listening practices appropriate to college-level work. It will prepare students who may not be familiar with the learning expectations of American universities to fully join the academic conversation.

Students may not receive credit for LTWR 4 after taking AWP 10. For more info, please check out the Virtual Advising Center.

EDS 25: American Higher Education and the Collegiate Experience (4 units)

This course is designed to help students think critically about multicultural issues in higher education, as well as the purpose of higher education within the larger context of society. Topics include American higher education history, organization, policy, curricula, and access.

AND

A secondary course (optional) – selected in consultation with the Math Testing and Placement Office and/or an academic department advisor. These courses are SUBJECT TO CHANGE depending on course/faculty availability.

Math 2: Introduction to College Mathematics (4 units)

A highly adaptive course designed to build on students’ strengths while increasing overall mathematical understanding and skill. This multimodality course will focus on several topics of study designed to develop conceptual understanding and mathematical relevance: linear relationships; exponents and polynomials; rational expressions and equations; models of quadratic and polynomial functions and radical equations; exponential and logarithmic functions; and geometry and trigonometry. Workload credit only—not for baccalaureate credit. Prerequisites: Math Placement Exam qualifying score.

2024 Course Option 3 (Tentative)

These courses are SUBJECT TO CHANGE depending on course/faculty availability.

In this option, in-person Summer Bridge students will have the opportunity to participate in a math program as a primary coutse and a First Year Experience secondary course:

Accelerate to Calculus (A2C)

Modality: In-person only

Length of Course: Aug. 5, 2024 - Sept 7, 2024

Are you ready to embark on a new math adventure? Join us for an exciting opportunity with our Accelerate to Calculus (A2C) program. Designed for students like you who are eager to excel in mathematics, A2C offers an intensive 5-week in-person journey packed with support, collaboration, and community.

 

What is Accelerate to Calculus?

A2C is a FREE non-credit bearing program (will not affect GPA/not appear on transcript) tailored to students placed in Math 2, providing them with essential support and resources needed to excel in precalculus and beyond. Over the course of five weeks, you'll dive deep into college mathematics and precalculus topics, preparing you to feel even more confident to take on calculus concepts throughout your time at UCSD. Upon the end of five weeks, you will be able to retake the Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE) and potentially be placed in a higher mathematics course for the fall quarter–all without any impact on your GPA.

 

Who is invited to join:

  • If you are a student who is looking to sharpen your mathematical abilities

  •  You are a student who was placed in Math 2 after taking the Math Placement Exam 

AND

  • You are looking to be part of a supportive community to help you place up and out of Math 2 in the fall quarter
